Child (and Family) Therapy

I take a psychodynamic, behavioral approach when assessing clients. This means looking at underlying emotions (both positive and negative) that come from life experiences. Your child will be observed by me and you will educate me on how he or she shows his or her emotions in the world and at home. You will teach me what your parenting styles are and what works or does not work with your particular child. Every kid (and individual, really) has their own temperament. It is key to learn what each person’s temperament is to best treat and/or work with them.

You and your child will learn effective, positive ways to communicate with one another, express your feelings and emotions to one another, and learn effective coping strategies (skills) to better manage life’s stressors. Behavioral Therapy is effective and works. Your child wants and really needs to be understood, as do you.

From a Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral standpoint, you and your child will create 1 to 3 treatment goals to work towards throughout our work together. Your child will learn effective ways to regulate and express feelings and emotions and know when to use a coping skill. Your child’s beliefs and behaviors will be challenged so that they can learn to change what they’ve known this far in life. Positive behavior change influences positive relationships. Sessions will start on a weekly basis and move to every 2, every 3, or even 1 time per month as treatment continues. The timeline is yours and your child’s. We will work together to build a relationship that goes at the speed necessary for your particular needs.

Parents involvement in Child Therapy is key. I have more recently begun doing more work with parents since becoming a parent myself. I say I was blessed with the 2 children that I have to be a better Behavioral Therapist (they challenge me daily)!
